A former police detective saved his family after an intense shootout with armed robbers that had besieged his Chadcombe home Monday night, Nhau has learnt.

Joseph Nemaisa, who sources say was stationed at the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s CID Homicide section, reportedly sent a message to social media platforms relating the experience soon after the shootout.

“Guys I’m in shock, I’m sad and happy at the same time. Five armed robbers stormed my home armed with three guns including an AK rifle.

“I exchanged gunfire with the robbers. I shot three of them dead and two escaped through a spare bedroom window.

“I’m safe, wife and kids safe too. My house is all blood. I survived 12 gunshots, wife and kids safe. Lost a few items including USD$1000-00, one of my guns and a few clothes.

“Police are at my house as we speak. I thank the Almighty for the skill and courage. Thank you all,” he said.

The gunfire fiasco resulted in the death of three suspected male robbers, while two other accomplices escaped by scaling over a precast wall at the property.

Police Tuesday confirmed the incident which occurred at House Number 2875 Pheasant Road, and said the bodies of the deceased trio have since been ferried to the Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary to await identification and post mortems.

Seventeen live rounds and 12 spent cartridges were recovered by a team of detectives from the homicide department who attended to the scene.

A docket has since been opened under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9.23.

According to a leaked police memorandum, the complainant, Fadzanai Musarurwa (36), arrived home around 8.45pm and observed three male adults walking near her house before she drove into the yard, parked her car and closed the gate.

While she was sitting in the lounge room with some family members she heard her dogs barking viciously outside.

She ordered her brother, Masimba Musarurwa to lock the door, but moments later there were sounds of someone trying to force it open from outside.

While another family member, Courage Nemaisa called his father, Joseph, to rush to their rescue, the five suspects reportedly managed to force open the door using a crow bar and screw drivers, after which they started assaulting everyone inside.

(Fadzanai)Musarurwa, who had locked herself in the toilet was forced to come out and she was slapped with open hands.

The robbers, who had two AK47 rifles, force-marched her to the bedroom where she surrendered US$850, a Samsung M20 cellphone, Acer laptop and a shotgun.

Meanwhile, (Joseph) Nemaisa arrived as the robbers were about to escape, and a shootout ensued.

Three of the five robbers were killed on the spot, and two who survived the ordered Musarurwa to search the deceased’s pockets where the deceased’s identity cards and cellphones were retrieved.

They also collected the firearms they had and escaped through one of the spare bedroom’s windows. Nhau/Indaba
