Fugitive Robber, Rapist ‘Freedom’ Short-Lived

Police have arrested fugitive robber and rapist Sam Muropa who was on the run after allegedly escaping from Harare Remand Prison last Friday.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyati confirmed the arrest in a statement.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Sam Muropa (31) who escaped from Harare Remand Prison while on remand (in custody) on 1st October 2021. The suspect is facing six counts of robbery and rape, three counts of robbery and aggravated indecent assault, nine counts of armed robbery and one count of impersonation.”

According to Asst Comm Nyati, detectives received information yesterday that the suspect was driving an unregistered Toyota Wish searching for a team to commit further robberies.

“The detectives acted on the information and arrested the suspect in Kuwadzana area, Harare.

“Investigations by police revealed that the suspect had stolen the Toyota Wish at Kuwadzana 2 shops from Bruce Muponza (47) on the pretext that he wanted to hire the vehicle to Whitehouse and back to Kuwadzana,” he said.

According to ZimLive, an online publication, prisons authorities believe he was assisted by prison officers in the escape. Muropa reportedly escaped from Harare Remand Prison by scaling the security wall.

A source at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) said: “Muropa was a category D prisoner and was occupying Cell 12. He was reported missing at about 4.30pm on October 1.

“As far as I know, it was not until October 3 that a report was made to the police. I suspect someone within prisons wanted a cover-up because clearly he had inside help. But knowing the kind of crimes Muropa is accused of, you would think the prison service would have issued an immediate alert to inform the country that a dangerous prisoner accused of raping up to 21 women was on the loose,” reported ZimLive.
