Govt Resuscitates Rushinga’s Water Supplies

The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement last Thursday officially commissioned a water supply pipe in Rushinga district that has been down for years.

Established 25 years ago, the asbestos pipeline that was rehabilitated had developed several leaks affecting the district’s water supplies.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Agriculture minister Dr Anxious Masuka said his ministry rehabilitated the supply pipe through the Zimbabwe National Water Supply Authority (ZINWA) .

He said the same productive work was being conducted throughout the country with the intention to improve the country’s water supplies in a bid to improve the country’s food security.

“Rushinga in particular is a very dry district whose need for investment in the development of water treatment and reticulation systems cannot be over emphasised. The water treatment has the capacity to propel the expansion of Rushinga Growth Point and turn it into an economic hub which has the potential to contribute immensely towards the success of NDS 1,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Monica Mavhunga said the development confirmed and affirmed the new dispensation’s determination to end water insecurity in the country.

“The government appreciates how water insecurity can impede current endeavors to transform Zimbabwe into an upper middle income economy by 2030. Investment in the provision of water to citizens lays a strong foundation for the creation and sustenance of a prosperous people considering that water transcends all social economic sectors. Water is life,” she said.

The rehabilitated pipe line will supply water to Rushinga growth point, Chimhanda Township and Hospital, 140 farmers under the Chimhanda Irrigation scheme and Nyamatikiti High School.

According to the 2012 census statistics, the district has 70 040 people and generally receives low rainfall and under region four.

Rushinga legislator Tendai Nyabani said the district can now meaningfully contribute towards the economic development of the province and consequently contributing to the success of Vision 2030. Nhau/Indaba
