Econet Faces Third Day of Technical Woes, Disrupting Airtime, Ecocash & Banking Services

by Judith Matanire

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country’s largest telecommunications and technology company, is in the midst of a third consecutive day of technical difficulties, causing widespread disruptions to essential services such as airtime purchases, Ecocash transactions, and banking services.

Customers across the nation have been left frustrated and inconvenienced by the ongoing issues that have plagued the company’s systems since the beginning of the week.

The problems first emerged on Monday morning when users reported difficulties in purchasing airtime and making transactions through the popular mobile money platform, Ecocash. As the day progressed, the issues escalated, affecting a wider range of services including mobile data, calls, and internet connectivity. Subscribers took to social media to vent their frustrations, with many expressing concerns about the impact on their daily lives and businesses.

The situation worsened on Wednesday and has now extended into a third day, with no clear resolution in sight. Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has issued a statement acknowledging the technical challenges and assuring customers that their technical team is working around the clock to restore normalcy to the affected services.

“Important Notice! We are facing a technical challenge that is affecting recharge, data and banking services. We regret the inconvenience caused and are working to restore normal service”, said the statement.

However, the company has not provided a timeline for when the issues are expected to be fully resolved.

The disruptions have not only inconvenienced individual customers but also had a significant impact on businesses that rely on Econet’s services for their day-to-day operations. Banks and other financial institutions that use Ecocash for transactions have been particularly hard hit, with many reporting delays and difficulties in processing payments and transfers.

As customers continue to grapple with the effects of the ongoing technical problems, there is growing frustration and triggered a public debate on the impact of preserving monopolies while shunning competition with many criticizing authorities for keeping the doors closed on game changers like Starlink Internet in favour of embattled locals.
