“Leadership Should Be Contextualised”: ITI President

Every leader should have the capacity and patience to understand the people they lead for an organisation to achieve its full thrust and objectives, Impact Training Institute (ITI) President Dr Elias Chakabwata revealed last Saturday.

During a two-day coordinated leadership seminar running under the theme ‘Leadership Excellence’, Dr Chakabwata explained the importance of organisational culture and how it impacts organisations both positively and negatively.

He further emphasised the need for leaders to practice emotional intelligence in order to lead effectively.

“If you don’t want the heat stay out of the kitchen, because leadership generates heat men and women who have a backbone should be in the driving seat.

Leadership is responsibility and it is work,” said Dr Chakabwata.

The ITI President reiterated the importance of understanding the people within an organisation one heads so as to lead them in context.

“Leadership can be defined as influence, now for leadership to be effective there is need for relevance otherwise we can be strolling in the park with big titles purporting to be leading yet nothing is happening.”

Dr Chakabwata holds several local and international degrees and is a leadership guru, family therapist, renowned Bible teacher and consultant counselor.

Among the delegates were pastors and apostles, legal practitioners, Principals of Bible Schools as well as corporate leaders who testified how the seminar had shifted their perspectives on leadership.

Advocate Fortunate Bere, Governance and Ethics Head at Zimbabwe Council of Pentecostal Churches (ZCPC) who also serves as deputy chairperson of the Board of Governors for the Pan Africa Christian College (PACC) lauded the seminar.

“The seminar was very insightful, enriching, and timely for some of us who are wrapping up the year, strategically planning for the next while doing reviews on quite a number of things including our leadership succession plan, system of government and staff performance. The seminar touched on key aspects that impact any type of an organisation be they religious, the government, non-governmental or otherwise.”

“You see everything rises and falls on leadership. A leader should be able to manage crisis, should be one who is sensitive to the needs of the people, one who plans with the future of the organisation in mind as mirrored in its vision, mission, core values and objectives and amongst others one who keeps developing him/herself.”

“When a leader invests in self-development, he/she multiplies his/her capacity thereby becoming the lead and not to the contrary a lid that blocks and stifles the followers. It takes such investment to develop combat and strategic intelligence which have always been key to help a leader to navigate in organisation’s ups and downs as she/he leads different people with different backgrounds, different personalities and different levels of interest,” said Advocate Bere.

Former broadcaster Mr. Greck Machekano, who was part of the delegates testified that it was high time such programmes go to the rest of the country’s provinces to impact the nation positively and bring about transformation in terms of leadership both in the corporate sector and the church.

Attending delegates traveled from as far as Masvingo, Zvishavane, Rusape and Chegutu to attend the empowering seminar which also tackled issues on corporate culture, delegation, leading of various personalities and change management.
