A male quartet in the art of stealing electricity transmission copper cables has been sentenced to a combined 27 years behind bars.
Bindura Magistrate Esteri Chiwasa sent Frighton Moyo (42), Munyaradzi Mahereni (40), Tafadzwa Motsangabere (30) and Luckmore Honde (27) all of Wayerera Village, Chief Masembura to the slammer.
Prosecuting, Edward Katsvairo alleged that on 7 September this year a crack team comprising of members from ZRP’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Police Intelligence (PI) and members from the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) were assigned to investigate cases of the unlawful vandalism of state infrastructure.
The team received a tip-off that the first three allegedly possessed copper cables in Wayerera village.
Acting on the tip-off, they swiftly drove there but could not locate them.
Information was supplied that they had already left using a Honda Fit belonging to Blessing Chigariro heading to Harare via the Bindura-Domboshava to sell their loot.
The team pursued the trio and caught up with them at a police road block in Chinamhora.
Upon searching their car, they found a sack with the cables stashed underneath the car’s back seat weighing 48,25kg.
Upon being interviewed, the three implicated Honde as their supplier leading to his arrest.
Moyo was sentenced to nine years whilst Mahereni and Motsangabere were sentenced to five years each.
