Minister Encourages Journalists To Monetise Their Content

Kadoma Bureau

Journalists and content creators have been urged to monetise their content as they are the key drivers for Zimbabwe to keep up with the world’s dynamic shift to full digitisation.

Addressing media practitioners under the banner Zimbabwe Online Content Creators (ZOCC) in Kadoma, Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Kindness Paradza said it was high time creators adopt an entrepreneurial mindset for survival.

Paradza said content creators should not die poor equating this to the scenario surrounding the late popular actress Rhoda Mtembe popularly known as Mai Sorobhi.

She died Tuesday at the age of 79.

Her daughter, Martha Mtembe pleaded for assistance through the media for the family to arrange a decent burial despite her popularity in the arts sector.

“Those who can assist us to meet the funeral costs, please do help us. We do not have enough resources. There is insufficient food right now to cater for the mourners and we do not have money to hire transport to will ferry people to the cemetery,” she said.

Mai Sorobhi became a household name for her role in the local drama series Paraffin which was a favourite of many.

“We don’t want to see a situation where in the unlikely event that you die, we are all asked to contribute to buy your coffin, no!”

“We don’t like that, she was good in what she did. So, you as young content creators should rise above that and make sure that you monetise your content,” he said.

Mai Sorobhi died a poor lady last Tuesday – 12 September at the age of 79 despite making a name for herself during her hey days.

Paradza also warned journalists and content creators who become overzealous and start working as political activists which is against the profession.

“If you see that you are in politics too deep, please leave the profession and come and join us,” he said.

Over 60 professional content creators are taking part in the two-day workshop being hosted by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz), regulators of the digital space.

They were drawn from the country’s 10 provinces. Nhau/Indaba
