A health hazard is looming in Harare’s oldest suburb, Mbare, following acute water shortages that have seen the area go for three days without the precious liquid, Nhau/Indaba has established.
Scores of families living in the old and dilapidated flats in the suburb share a single toilet. It is common for up to five families to share a one-bedroomed flat in these former hostels, raising fears of an outbreak of water-borne diseases if the situation is not immediately addressed.
Areas affected by the crisis include National, Joburg Lines (KumaJubhegi), Mbare Flats, Matererini Flats, Shawasha Flats, Nenyere Flats and Matapi Flats, leaving residents jostling for the precious liquid from the few overwhelmed boreholes in the area.
A team from Nhau/Indaba witnessed fistfights breaking out between residents and self-appointed custodians of the boreholes (touts), who get paid by some people and small business owners to “jump” the queue.
Business in the Koeffman complex, Magaba and residents of Mbare Police camp have also felt the pinch. This comes at a time the City Fathers are having sleepless nights over inefficiency in supplying clean water to Harare residents.
Adding to the problem is poor service delivery as reeking heaps of litter, which have not been collected for weeks are seen scattered all over the suburb.
Efforts to get a comment from Harare City Council were fruitless. Nhau/Indaba
