A 28-year-old Mt Darwin man allegedly took his cousin’s car for a joy drive without consent last Saturday and ended up killing a pedestrian while speeding, Nhau/Indaba has heard.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed and identified the man as Tafadzwa Nyoni.

The deceased was identified as Anderson Tuta (16) of TelOne Quarters, Mt Darwin.

He said, “On 16 December at around 4pm, Tuta was walking along Camperdown Road, towards the Harare – Mukumbura highway.

Tafadzwa Nyoni, with a white Mercedes Benz came from behind the deceased speeding and hit him. Tuta was killed on the spot and Nyoni sped away.”

He said another motorist identified Tuta’s lifeless body and ferried him to Mt Darwin Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had fractured ribs and head injuries.

“Police also managed to identify the Mercedes Benz that killed Tuta with registration numbers AFO 3663, a shattered windscreen, human hair and blood stains.’’

The vehicle was then impounded for forensic examination and further processing by VID.

Nyoni is facing a culpable homicide a charge and another for failing to stop after an accident.

Mundembe urged motorists to operate their vehicles responsibly whilst on the roads.

“We urge motorists to drive with caution and drive slowly in build up areas. They should respect all traffic regulations.”

It is apparent the driver was speeding all the way, because the road has speed humps. Parents and guardians must keep vehicle keys safe to avoid unlicensed drivers from accessing them and unlawfully driving vehicles on public roads,” urged Mundembe. Nhau/Indaba
