It is 29 days to go before the US election and US president Donald Trump is in hospital.
Naturally, many questions are being asked: Is he going to die? What effect will this disease have on his campaign? Is he going to lose the election? Will the US simply cancel the election? Could this simply be a coincidence? Is it a Trump election campaign strategy? Is the so-called American deep state involved in trying to destabilise Trump’s campaign? Is it the Democrats’? Could it be the Chinese? Is Trump simply in trouble for making bad decisions about the virus?
What has this got to do with Zimbabwe? Everything. Zimbabwe is dealing with election/political conspiracy theories of its on since the Minister of Health and Child Care Retired General Constantino Chiwenga revealed through new Covid-19 containment measures that by-elections, which had been set for December, have been postponed indefinitely.
Of course, that is a story for another day. Covid-19 statistics are going down in the country, the economy is opening up and soon, entertainment joints, live shows and night clubs could also return.
Yet, on the other side of the world, countries like France are seeing a fresh rise in cases, in what is referred to as the “second wave”. New lockdowns are being implemented. Will this fate befall Zimbabwe and Africa as well?
In a nutshell, there is more to a US election than one simply becoming a president of a country, geo-politics are also involved.
Was Trump foolish?
Was Trump foolish in his handling of the virus, refusing to wear masks, holding rallies and also picking up a fight with one of the most powerful bodies in the world, the United Nations World Health Organisation?
Not just that, Trump also started an economic war with China, a country whose true military might, economic strength and ambitions are unknown. China lost billions of dollars in trade and are continuing to lose money because of Trump’s economic policies.
On the other hand, Trump has also called Covid-19, the Chinese virus, causing a lot of anger in the Oriental State. Did the Chinese decide to influence the US election by unleashing a bioweapon on the US, targeting Trump himself?
American presidents are called “leaders of the free world”.
And, they are known to be always more adventurous in their second terms and someone somewhere could be worried about this and trying to remove the threat.
Remember, before Covid-19 hit the US, the economy was doing extremely well, unemployment was at a record low. But as Covid-19 hit its peak, over 6 million new job losses were recorded in America in a single day.
It could be a coincidence but the timing of Trump’s infection is curious. It appears the virus is favouring the Democrats, who are now discussing postal votes, which ensure that everyone votes.
Will he lose?
This is no longer just about losing an election, Trump could even lose his life. Scientists and doctors have said because of weight and age, he is more likely to die, in fact, 240 times more likely to die than an average healthy person.
Like the late Pierre Nkurunzinza the former president of Burundi, Trump downplayed the virus yet he knew it was deadlier than the flu before it hit the country but wanted to play down the crisis.
Burundi president refused to acknowledge the existence of the coronavirus and it killed him. Before his death, Nkurunziza said the pandemic is transmitted by air and God has “cleared the coronavirus from Burundi’s skies”.
Trump also said the virus was a “a flu” and would disappear by Easter (April). But it has gone on to infiltrate his own bubble and infect not just him but several people around him. Over 200 000 Americans have been recorded as dying with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.
On May 15, Burundi expelled representatives of the World Health Organisation from the country, accusing them of manipulating the outbreak. Trump has also been fighting the WHO.
Conspiracies
Just like HIV/Aids, the novel coronavirus, which was first discovered in China in December 2019 and gone on to ravage the world, has seen so many conspiracy theories arise.
Was the coronavirus manufactured in a lab? Did it come from bats? Is it a Chinese military weapon targeted at Western nations? Was it created to deal with Trump? Is it an act of God to save the world from Trump? Who created the coronavirus?
One substantial survey in the United States of America found that almost 30 percent of Americans believe that this virus came from a lab.
There are suggestions that the outbreak was human-made. Some say the virus leaked from a Chinese lab studying coronaviruses. Others suggest the virus was engineered to spread among humans.
Even the most secure laboratories do sometimes have accidents, and a human-engineered pandemic has been identified as a possible risk to our civilisation.
Li-Meng Yan, a Chinese virologist who says she fled the country after receiving threats due to her concerns about the origins of Covid-19 and claims of a cover-up involving the Chinese Communist Party, recently told Taiwan News that the novel coronavirus originated in a military laboratory overseen by the People’s Liberation Army.
Yan, who says she was among the first researchers to study Covid-19 in China, has previously told the media that the virus is not naturally occurring and described the widely held theory that it originated in a so-called wet market in Wuhan as “a smokescreen”.
Speaking to Spanish daily El Mundo in July, Yan said she had been forced to flee China after raising her concerns with officials and a World Health Organisation contractor called Lee Poon.
She claims that she was told to “be careful and not step on the red line; that is to say, to not go against government procedures or question their principles. If not, I would find myself in trouble and I could disappear”.
Yan also said that China and the WHO were aware of the existence of Covid-19 long before the first cases were reported in Wuhan last December. The WHO only declared the novel coronavirus a global pandemic on 11 March.
Yan told Taiwan News that when she approached her superiors: “I had already clearly evaluated that the virus came from a Communist Party military laboratory.”
However, according to the scientist, a credible publication, this virus isn’t a bioweapon.
New diseases have emerged throughout human history, and we have seen two major coronavirus outbreaks in the last two decades: SARS and MERS. So we shouldn’t be surprised by the arrival of the Covid-19 virus.
Many similar viruses are found in wild bats, and it seems likely that is the origin of this one, probably via an intermediate host. Similarly, we know that both SARS and MERS came from bats, so there is no reason to invoke a laboratory accident.
Researchers led by Shan-Lu Liu at the Ohio State University say there is “no credible evidence” of genetic engineering.
“The virus’s genome has been sequenced, and if it had been altered, we would expect to see signs of inserted gene sequences. But we now know the points that differ from bat viruses are scattered in a fairly random way, just as they would be if the new virus had evolved naturally,” they said. Nhau/Indaba
