Police Hunt For US$57k Chivi Heist Suspects

Armed robbery cases are on the rise in Zimbabwe.

Police are hunting for a gang of five armed robbers, who pounced on a cash-in-transit vehicle at Chivi’s Mukuru outlet on Monday morning.

The robbery comes hardly a month after six armed robbers pounced on two security guards delivering cash at CBZ 8th Avenue branch in Bulawayo, disarmed them, hijacked their armoured vehicle before getting away with an undisclosed amount of money.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the robbers got away with US$35 000, ZAR350 000 and Z$2 000 after pointing firearms at the security guards who were disembarking from the vehicle before stealing the cash box.

“They jumped into an unregistered Toyota Revo twin cab which was used as a gate away car and sped off towards Mandamabwe Business Centre. The suspects also robbed three star pistols from the guards.”

Nyathi said the police were disturbed by robbery incidents which are targeting cash-in-transit vehicles and implored security companies to strengthen their security measures in consultation with clients.

Meanwhile, the ZRP has identified the police officer involved in the ZRP Braeside incident which went viral on social media recently and investigations are now in full swing with disciplinary measures being put in motion.

“The ZRP appreciates and applaud the public for raising concern over the two video clips,” the police said. Nhau/Indaba
