ZWL1 Million For Shamva District Hospital Pharmacy Reconstruction

Bindura Bureau

Government through the Civil Protection Unit has injected ZWL1 million for the reconstruction of Shamva district hospital pharmacy which was razed down by a fire in the early hours of Tuesday, Nhau has learnt.

Medicine, drugs and property comprising of refrigerators, anti-retro virals (ARVs) and COVID-19 vaccines worth about US$30 million dollars went up in smoke during the disaster.

Investigations to establish the cause of the fire are still in progress and an electrical fault has since been ruled out since there was no power during the time.

An arson has also been ruled out.

Mashonaland Central Provincial Health Services Administrator, Pazwell Mwazungunya said the unfortunate incident left the hospital without any medication such that supplies had to be sourced from health centres around Mashonaland Central.

He said they were also expecting supplies from NatPharm to complement what they had managed to source.

“We had to run around the province in areas such as Muzarabani, Mt Darwin, Mazowe and Guruve sourcing for medication and refrigerators to store some of the medicines we sourced. NatPharm will deliver another consignment again today,” he said.

The destroyed pharmacy stored medicine and drugs for all the clinics in Shamva district.

State Minister Monica Mavhunga blamed the disaster on the poor state of preparedness for disasters in the province.

She lamented the lack of a fire tender in the district and the provincial capital Bindura.

The fire was doused by Harare fire brigade in its final stages after the pharmacy had been razed down.

Minister Mavhunga appealed to stakeholders in the area to come on board and alleviate the situation by raising funds to complement the CPU’s gesture. Nhau/Indaba
