International Chess Delegation For Zimbabwe

An International Chess Federation (FIDE) delegation led by Chess In Education Commission chairman Jerry Nash is set to visit Zimbabwe next month on a mission to advance chess as an educational tool.

The delegation will be in the country from July 9-16. The visit was confirmed by the Chess in Education Commission chairman.

“It is my pleasure to confirm our upcoming visit to Zimbabwe to advance chess as an educational tool.

As we have discussed previously, we believe chess helps students to develop the academic and 21st century skills they need to be successful in and beyond the classroom,” said Nash.

He said their visit will also take them to the resort town of Victoria Falls.

“Our visit is expected to take place from July 9-16. Current plans include delivery of the preparation of teachers’ course, visits with decision makers regarding chess in education, and other related promotional activities.

“The Preparation of Teachers’ Course will be delivered in Harare from July 11-14 and the meetings and promotional activities will continue in Victoria Falls from July 14-16.

“We also plan to bring in chess equipment to provide to educators who complete the course successfully.

I am excited about this opportunity to meet in person all those who are interested in bringing the benefits of the game of chess to the youth of the country.

“The learners who will benefit from this instruction will in turn have the chance to make a difference in the lives of the others.

The benefits for learners, their families and society in general are incalculable,” he said.

Chess is one of the rising minority sport codes in the country.

In November last year, Zimbabwe chess received high appointments into the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Commissions with three officials inducted into the sport’s mother body for the period 2023-26. The three appointees from Zimbabwe were Erick Takawira, Fungirayiini Mushaninga and Tapiwa Gora, with the three to serve in different sections of the world chess governing body.

The Social Commission is an arm of FIDE dedicated to using chess as a tool for social development. Zimbabwe has been one of the leading pioneers of the social development initiative as seen through chess in prisons whose success is witnessed by the Behind the Wall Chess Tournament and participation as the only African representative in the Inter-continental Online Chess.
