ARTIST OF THE WEEK: KANI MUSIC— KaniMusic, A Grouping Set To Rock The Zim Gospel Scene Through Jazz

KaniMusic is an upcoming family project established in 2018 by two brothers born and bred in Kwekwe.

Besides being into music, the siblings are of humble professions. The elder brother Kanizios Musonza (37) is based in Kwekwe where he is a baker by profession while his younger brother Cropass Musonza is a police officer based in Harare.

Their songs are available on YouTube and they reflect on the daily life and struggle of the Zimbabwean people, turning to God to supply them with the much needed life restoration.

Kanizios is the lead vocalist while Cropass is the manager of the group who organises booking sessions or anything related to the group’s shows.

He is the main funder of the group by sacrificing his salary from the civil service, which is quite a huge challenge.

“We are managing with the little that is there, with the hope that when our popularity grows, everything will turn out well for us,” he says.

Kanizios is married and has one child while his younger brother is married and fathers two boys.

Their band is also boosted Edward “Uncle Eddie” Dube who is a specialist in acoustics and rhythm.

The group specialises in gospel music fusioned with Afrojazz but can also produce, RnB and Soul.

They mainly work with Lazzy T of BigTingz records and Blessing “Bishop” Masanga as their producers.

Asked on what motivated them into music, Cropass signalled that their main inspiration came from the popular Zig-Zag band, Bhundu Boys, Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu, Chimurenga guru Thomas Mapfumo and Pastor G.

According to Cropass, their Kwekwe home is located near Mbizo stadium in Kwekwe and they used to sneak out of the house at around 3:00am just to make it into the stadium, when these artists were performing.

The jazz music played by the Zig-Zag band gave them much inspiration until they finally dropped their first single titled Ndinoda Shanduko in 2018.

This was the only project they managed to complete that year.

In 2019 they produced another single titled Kukura Kurerwa.

This year they released a track in August dedicated to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic titled “Heal our land”, following its toll worldwide.

The song is an outcry to God to spare Zimbabwe from the debilitating effects of the pandemic that has left many countries at the brink of recession.

Their latest offering titled “He shall supply” was recently realised and they are working on the video ought to be released before year end.

It preaches the art of continuity in blooming and developing to greater heights centred on the lyrics: “God’s spring never runs dry”.

Mixed with Shona and English blended with fine-tuned instruments with a deep message that what you wish for from God can be given in more enumerable measures.

By November the group is also working on another single they intend to release titled “Good morning Africa”.

As upcoming artists they are akin to so many challenges. Their songs have not received enough airplay on the local radio stations and they are making the clarion call for DJs to give them some airplay so that their works reach a wider audience.

They sent their demo tapes to every station but nothing fruitful has materialised yet, this is their only call.

Currently they have attracted the attention of South African based jazz artist Penias Phiri who expressed his interest to collaborate with them.

They are also working to secure collaborations with other local artists and produce videos for their singles.

“We like jazz music as it attracts the mature class of society. It I genre that takes one to sit down, listen to the music and find the meaning of the lyrics, “said Cropass with a shiny smile. Nhau/Indaba
