Private healthcare giant Cimas Health Group has reaffirmed its commitment to saving lives through public-private partnerships following its continued support of the just-ended Egypt–Zimbabwe Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Mission at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Known as Open Heart Camp 2, the surgical mission saw 10 children aged between six months and 10 years undergo life-saving heart operations for congenital conditions. Cimas was among the core local sponsors working alongside the Ministry of Health and Child Care, The Avenues Clinic, NOIC, and international partners.
This marks the second time the institution has supported the initiative, having also participated in last year’s inaugural camp in November 2024.
Cimas Health Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Vuli Ndlovu, said the organisation’s involvement reflects its broader vision of building healthier communities beyond the private sector.
“Having supported the first Open Heart Surgical Camp and witnessed the life-saving results, we felt compelled to participate again this year. It aligns with our purpose to inspire healthier communities,” said Mr Ndlovu.
He noted that the programme is not only about saving lives today but also about empowering local medical professionals for the future.
“This camp plays a key role in strengthening paediatric cardiac surgery in Zimbabwe, a field that remains underdeveloped in the region. Our participation is part of a shared responsibility to enhance national health delivery,” he said.
Mr Ndlovu added that Cimas Health Group remains open to similar partnerships going forward especially those focused on improving healthcare access for vulnerable groups.
“Despite economic headwinds, our commitment remains strong. At Cimas, we are not driven solely by profit we are led by the responsibility to save lives,” he said.
The surgeries, performed by a collaborative team of local and Egyptian cardiothoracic surgeons were offered at no cost to patients many of whom had long waited for access to specialised treatment.
Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Honourable Sleiman Kwidini, praised the contribution of private sector players like Cimas describing their involvement as a model of “true corporate citizenship.”
“To NOIC, The Avenues Clinic, and Cimas you’re not just investing in surgeries; you’re investing in futures, in hope, and in a stronger Zimbabwe,” said Kwidini. “This reflects His Excellency President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, where world-class healthcare is a cornerstone of our development agenda.”
Minister Kwidini also applauded the efforts of Zimbabwean healthcare workers, saying the mission would not have succeeded without their dedication and professionalism.
The Avenues Clinic General Manager, Mrs Sibusisiwe Ndhlovu, also spoke on the sidelines of the event, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to initiatives that prioritise patient wellbeing.
“This mission is life-changing. As The Avenues Clinic, we proudly stand with others who believe in access to specialised care for our most vulnerable,” she said.
With at least 4,500 children born with congenital heart disease annually in Zimbabwe, the need for such interventions remains critical. Cimas’ continued backing of the Open Heart Camp demonstrates the vital role the private sector can play in bridging the healthcare gap. Nhau/Indaba
