Cimas Health Group says all is in place for the inaugural Cimas @80 Media Awards, set to take place tonight at Cresta Churchill Hotel in Bulawayo, as the organisation marks eight decades of service to Zimbabwe’s health sector.

Launched in September and backed by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), the awards are designed to honour journalists who continue to shape public understanding of health issues through ethical, accurate, and impactful reporting. The ceremony forms part of the wider commemorations of Cimas Medical Aid Society’s 80th anniversary, running under the theme “Celebrating 80 Years of Transforming Lives.”

The awards attracted 120 entries across four categories—Healthcare Transformation, Health and Wellness, Excellence in Medical Innovation, and Public Health Awareness—reflecting growing interest in health reporting and the media’s role in spotlighting national health priorities. Participating journalists were required to publish stories between September 12 and October 31.

Cimas Chief Executive Officer Vuli Ndlovu said the initiative recognises the critical role journalists play in driving health literacy and building healthier communities.

“As we celebrate 80 years of Cimas Medical Aid Society’s service to the nation, we are honoured to recognise journalists who continue to tell powerful, life-changing health stories,” he said, adding that the organisation remains committed to strengthening ethical, fact-checked health reporting.

He noted that the overwhelming number of submissions demonstrates the media’s continued dedication to public health education.

“For us, this ceremony reflects not only a celebration of outstanding work, but also our long-term investment in supporting and empowering ethical health journalism in Zimbabwe,” Ndlovu said.

Cimas Health Group has been a consistent supporter of journalism excellence, partnering with ZUJ for two consecutive years to sponsor the Health Reporter of the Year Award at the National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA).

Tonight’s event will gather media practitioners, health experts, and stakeholders to celebrate the journalists contributing to a more informed and health-conscious society.
