Kazembe Kazembe Repairs Mt Darwin District Mortuary

Zanu PF Mashonaland Central chairperson, Kazembe Kazembe has brought relief to Mt Darwin district after financing the repair of the hospital’s mortuary which broke down in 2018, Nhau has learnt.

According to sources, when the mortuary broke down, bereaved families were left with no choice but to utilise private funeral parlours which charged exorbitant fees.

Nhau heard that the legislator parted with US$9 700 to get the mortuary running again.

Kazembe called on party cadres and leaders in the district to support communities they live in whenever they could.

“As individuals we must give a helping hand whenever it is necessary. This would help ease government expenditure thereby creating an allocation gap of funds that can be relayed towards other projects,” he said.

He further encouraged them to be conversant with developments in their communities as well as having time with their subjects.

His sentiments were supported by the District’s Coordinating Committee chairperson Cde Ranga who laid the blame of the hospital’s collapse on the old dispensation.

“The mortuary deteriorated into that state because of the old dispensation and it is being repaired because of the new dispensation,” he said.

Speaking on Sunday, the district’s medical officer Dr. George Mapiye said bereaved families over the past three years were forced to place their beloved ones at private funeral parlours or promptly bury them if they could not afford the charges.

He said the situation was further heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic which saw an increase in deaths.

“All along we have been encouraging our service seekers to collect their beloved ones who died on admission here as soon as they were pronounced dead because we had nowhere to place their corpses.”

“The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated the situation as deaths were on the increase and there was no space for the bodies as the mortuary was down.”

The mortuary has a holding capacity of six (6) corpses whilst the hospital’s sphere of influence covers four political constituencies in the district and other surrounding areas. Nhau/Indaba
