Lawyers representing incarcerated opposition Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume have announced that they have filed a notice of appeal on his behalf.
The appeal is against both his conviction and sentence in the ongoing case where he was charged with incitement to commit public violence was convicted by Harare Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka.
In a tweet, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) confirmed the latest developments.
“We have on behalf of Transform Zimbabwe political party leader Jacob Ngarivhume, filed a notice of appeal against both his conviction and sentence. Our lawyer @dnmlaw2011 (Costa Donsah) together with Professor Lovemore Madhuku argued that Harare Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka grossly misdirected herself and erred in convicting Ngarivhume of incitement to commit public violence as defined in section 187(1)(b) as read with section 36(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification & Reform) Act,” posted ZLHR.
Ngarivhume was recently slapped with a four-year jail term with one year suspended for organizing and leading a peaceful protest in July 2020 against corruption and denial of socio-economic rights to the people of Zimbabwe.
