Nhau journalist Gilbert Munetsi has been considered for a Zimbabwe Community News (ZCN) award for his exploits in boxing reportage which adjudicators acknowledged that it empowered communities.
In a notification correspondence to the veteran journalist, organisers of the event, Perfection Media, wrote:
“We are glad to inform you that we will honour you for your outstanding work during the second edition of the ZCN 2021 Awards ceremony to be held on January 28 at the HICC.
“Through your stories in the print media highlighting the work being done in the communities in the sporting discipline of boxing, our adjudicating team has found you a deserving choice for the Excellence in Boxing Journalism Award.”
Hosted annually, the awards recognise organisations and individuals who exemplify excellence in contributing to empowering communities.
Among other beats, Munetsi has been outstanding as a boxing writer, contributing to publications which include The Herald, Newsday, Daily News, Kwayedza, The Standard, The Sunday Mail, Manica Post, The Chronicle, and Sunday News.
Regionally, Munetsi has contributed to The Times of Zambia, Daily Times Malawi and The Southern Times (Namibia), among others. Currently, he writes for Nhau/Indaba.
A winner of several other awards, he started reporting on the sport of boxing in 1990 while studying Journalism at the Christian College of Southern Africa (CCOSA), and has at one time been appointed a member of the Zimbabwe Boxing and Wrestling Control Board. Nhau/Indaba
