Sanyati District Development Co-ordinator (DDC), Amigo Mhlanga was reportedly left nursing wounds after being assaulted by police officers clearing an unsanctioned meeting at Fitt Square, Kadoma on Monday.
The DDC was caught up in the skirmishes which left several other people injured after gathering to meet him over the issue of pirate taxis (mushikashika).
Nhau/Indaba heard that police details from the District Reaction Group (DRG) swiftly reacted and swooped on the unsuspecting group.
Following the unforeseen police action, Mhlanga allegedly sustained a cut on the head after falling to the ground during the skirmishes.
Security personnel who witnessed the incident said they had to scurry for cover as this was ‘sudden, shocking and indiscriminate’.
“We had to find cover in a hurry. It was sudden and shocking. Anyone could get caught up,” one of the security personnel details said after the mayhem had subsided.
Zanu PF Central Committee member Absolom Zvidzayi confirmed that Mhlanga was injured during the incident.
“I’m still at the police station. The DDC has returned from hospital. He has been sutured and has a bandage around his head.
“Several others were also injured and we are yet to assess the damage and see how we can assist with medication,” he said over the phone last night.
The gathering resulted from mushikashika organisers and operators who sought audience with the DDC after being reportedly waded off their ‘allocated operating area’, Monday morning.
It is alleged that some unnamed individuals had taken it upon themselves to organise the pirate taxis into what they termed ‘a well managed system’.
The move started Wednesday last week and has been running since then,Nhau/Indaba heard.
However, only fully registered commuter omnibuses have been given the green light to operate in the town after a Covid-19 induced ban.
Efforts to get a comment from the ZRP proved fruitless before publication. Nhau/Indaba
