The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will soon name the police officers involved in teargassing a bus loaded with passengers at Harare Exhibition Park this week.
Commisioner General Godwin Matanga said this during a press conference held by the ministry of Home affairs and Cultural heritage in Harare, Friday.
He said police had arrested seven details who are being investigated for the boob.
“When it comes to the incident which happened at the Harare Show Grounds, we have arrested seven officers and we are going to charge them under the Police Act. The officers who are carrying out the investigations are the ones who are going to pick the appropriate charge from the Police Act.”
Comm Gen Matanga said the police officers performed duty in an improper manner and they are going to face the music.
“As far as I am concerned right now, I can generally say they performed their duty improperly, so do not worry everything is being handled.”
He said he needed some time to get the names of the overzealous cops and the names will be announced by the national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
Meanwhile, Comm Gen Matanga said his organisation was given the green light to recruit 1 000 police officers by the Public Service Commission for the year 2020 as their last recruitment was made in 2018.
Matanga said the Covid-19 pandemic was the major stumbling block for their training to start. Nhau/Indaba
