A dramatic change of profession left Bindura Magistrate’s court shell-shocked after a former prosecutor there was on Monday hauled before magistrate Samantha Dhlamini accused of theft.
Andrew Maigeta changed robes to allegedly steal a car battery at Chiwaridzo (Progress) Shopping Centre sometime in January this year, a bizarre act that left the court gallery mouths agape.
During his court appearance, the State alleged that on 29 January, at around 7pm Maigeta and his accomplice, Ethan Chinoda, saw Emmanuel Musevenzi’s 12 volt Willard battery unattended in front of his shop and took it intending to sell it.
On February 6, Maigeta daringly approached Musevenzi selling the same battery, however, their miscalculated move turned sour after Musevenzi identified it through his initials inscribed for easy identification.
He advised Chinoda that the battery was his and swiftly took him to ZRP Chiwaridzo and made a report.
Chinoda was arrested and implicated Maigeta leading to his arrest too.
The duo were remanded out of custody until 6 March.
The battery is valued at US$50-00 and was recovered. Nhau/Indaba
