The Avenues Clinic has officially reopened its Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Obs and Gynae) Ward, marking another milestone in the hospital’s ongoing modernization programme aimed at enhancing patient care and comfort.

Speaking to journalists during a media tour on 29 September, The Avenues Clinic General Manager, Sibusisiwe Ndhlovu, said the reopening was part of a phased renovation project designed to improve the hospital’s facilities and services.

“We are now at the fourth stage of our renovations at The Avenues Clinic. We have already completed our surgical ward (One South), our medical ward (One North), and earlier this year the private and children’s ward. Today we are proud to present our refurbished Obs and Gynae Ward, which caters to new mothers and women’s health needs,” said Ndhlovu.

She stressed that the upgrades are not just about infrastructure, but also about ensuring patients receive the best possible outcomes in a supportive and modern environment. “We are all about good clinical outcomes. Our patients deserve healing in a modern and welcoming setting, supported by highly skilled doctors and nurses,” she said.

The new ward features 15 rooms, including four private rooms for patients who prefer individual spaces, and 11 shared rooms with two beds each. It also includes a specialist doctors’ corner, a nurses’ station, a ward manager’s office, and a fully stocked drug room to guarantee quick response to emergencies.

Ndhlovu highlighted the hospital’s integrated healthcare system, which allows most conditions to be treated in-house without the need for referrals. She also drew special attention to The Avenues Clinic’s neonatal intensive care capacity.

“We’ve got a world-class — I want to repeat this, you can quote me — a world-class neonatal intensive care unit, the best in this country. It is highly sought after, and we have successfully cared for babies born as early as 26 weeks who are now thriving,” she said proudly.

Currently, the hospital has 34 maternity beds, with an additional 14 upstairs, bringing the total capacity to 48.

Looking ahead, renovations will continue on the third floor and in the theatres, as the hospital works toward its goal of becoming one of the best healthcare facilities in Southern Africa.

“Our vision is to provide exceptional care and to complement government efforts in the health sector. With courage, fortitude, and support, anything is possible. We remain committed to delivering top-quality healthcare and inspiring healthier communities,” Ndhlovu told journalists.
