Two children have died while 14 others, including seven adults and four minors, are battling for their lives following a suspected case of food poisoning in Mashava, Masvingo.
According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the victims reportedly fell ill after eating sadza and drinking mahewu during a traditional beer ceremony held on 27 October 2025.
Police confirmed that two minors, aged three and seven, died after experiencing severe stomach pains shortly after the ceremony.
“Four children and seven adults are currently admitted at Masvingo General Hospital in critical condition, while three others are receiving treatment at Mashava Clinic,” said ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The ZRP has launched investigations into the incident to establish the cause of the poisoning.
“More details will be released in due course,” added Commissioner Nyathi.
