A Zebra Kiss bus driver who recently made headlines after one person died while several others were injured when an intercity bus rammed into a tipper truck at Bondamakara, along the Harare-Nyamapanda road, has been jailed for reckless driving.
Mike Makwara (49) appeared at Mutoko magistrate court facing the charges and was slapped with a two-year jail term after being convicted.
As part of the sentence, Makwara was banned from driving public service and heavy vehicles for life. His driver’s licence was also canceled as a deterrent measure against would-be offenders.
Circumstances leading to the sentence arose from his conduct captured in a video that went viral on social media showing him failing to take heed of a horn warning from a pursuing bus belonging to Rimbi Tours which intended to overtake.
Makwara kept obstructing the Rimbi driver from overtaking him by encroaching on the other lane.
Without warning, the Makwara overtook a Shackman Tipper truck resulting in the Rimbi bus failing to overtake thereby ramming into the back of the truck.
The whole scenario leading to the horrific crash was recorded live by passengers on the bus. Nhau/Indaba
