Two members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) have been sentenced to 40 years in jail each after they were court martialed following their involvement in last year’s Surrey Farm heist.
Lance Corporal Tatenda Dzimbanhete and Trooper Wilfred Munesu appeared before a Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) General Court Martial Wednesday and pleaded guilty to armed robbery charges.
According to a ZNA news release from Director Army and Public Relations, Colonel Alphios Makotore Friday, the duo had five years of their sentences suspended on condition that they restitute the complainant, Simon Arnold cash amounting to US$16 830 and R600.
Col. Makotore said the ZNA does not condone cases of indiscipline and misconduct and will continue to pass deterrent sentences on any would be offenders.
Dzimbanhete and Munesu were also reduced in rank to Private and First Year Trooper respectively before being summarily discharged from the ZDF with ignominy.
The latest move by the ZNA comes on the back drop of endless pleas from the public, law enforcement agents and Parliamentarians for the ZDF to take action on its errant members who have recently become masterminds of armed robberies. Nhau/Indaba
