6-Month-Old Baby Survives Lightning Strike, Mother Dies On Spot

By Richard Kawazi

A six-month-old baby survived after a lightning bolt struck its mother at Guttingwood farm in Bindura yesterday, Nhau/Indaba has heard.

Reports say Vigilance Mushore (19) of Trespasses Farm was fatally struck by the bolt at around 2pm while in the company of her six-month-old baby and her sibling aged 14.

The trio were allegedly passing through Guttingwood farm on their way to Burnside farm when the deadly incident occurred.

Mushore died on the spot leaving the baby with a burnt face and some damage to the eyes whilst her sibling did not suffer any injuries.

After the strike, the sibling ran to a nearby homestead where she alerted Chipo Kovi from Guttingwood farm who reported the matter to police for assistance.

Mashonaland Central ZRP Spokesperson, Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha confirmed the incident and told Nhau/Indaba that the baby was currently getting medical attention.

“The deceased suffered burns on the chest and lower back whilst the child suffered burns on the face and sustained injuries on her left eye and is yet to be attended by an eye specialist,” said Chikasha.

The deceased was then ferried to Bindura Hospital for postmortem.

Chikasha cautioned the public to be extra cautious during this rain season and avoid walking on open wet fields during thunderstorms as they risked being struck by lightning.  Nhau/Indaba
