Murder Accused Ex-Cop Complains Of Sleep Deprivation

  • Magistrate Grants Warrant Of Further Detention

Triple homicide suspect and ex-cop, Jaison Muvevi (43) today complained to magistrate Dennis Mangosi that detectives investigating his case were depriving him of sleep by adding extra handcuffs and hanging him from a bar.

This came shortly before police were granted a warrant for further detention with the former CID officer expected back in court on January 20.

Detectives handling the matter had requested three more days with Muvevi to allow them time to further manage the matter. The Investigating Officer in the matter, detective Pikisai Chikwazo, said they want more time to travel to Wedza for indications and to interview him.

However, the magistrate was mum on the alleged enhanced interrogation technique used on Muvevi where he claimed to have been handcuffed in a stress position with hands shackled above his head and thus unable to sleep.

Through his lawyer Mr Samson Dzingira, Muvevi opposed the application arguing that the police can always interview him while in the hands of prison officers.

Mr Parson Dziva appeared for the State.

Muvevi allegedly killed three people in Wedza last week and was on the run for two days before being caught in Mozambique.

Mozambican authorities initially refused to deport him citing an illegal gun possession charge in that country. They later made a climbdown and handed him over to Zimbabwean authorities after diplomatic interventions. Nhau/Indaba
