A Bindura quartet was last Friday slapped with a three month jail term for unlawful possession of ivory with the option of $15 000 fine each by Magistrate Samantha Dhlamini.
According to the State led by Audrey Murambiwa, Abel Nkhoma (38) of Batanai, Frighton Moyo (41) of Maganyani, Patrick Kamuzangaza (27) of 104 Trojan Section and Munyaradzi Mahorent (38) of Manhenga were found in possession of 49kgs of copper cables.
It was alleged that on February 1, 2022 at around 11am, detectives from CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit Bindura received information that Nkhoma, Moyo and Maganyani had acquired copper cables from Murambiwa.
The trio were transporting the cables to Harare via Harare-Domboshava road using a Honda Fit, registration number AET6075.
Information was relayed to Chinamhora Police base where Detective Constables Mutero and Mahachi mounted a roadblock in conjunction with ZRP Murehwa traffic at the 37km peg along Harare-Domboshava road before intercepting them.
Detective Constable Mutero searched the vehicle in the presence of Detective Constable Mahachi and ZRP Murehwa traffic details and recovered a sack containing copper cables that was stashed in the boot leading to their arrest.
Maganyani led detectives to Murambiwa’s residence where they had acquired the copper cables.
A search was conducted at the homestead and piles of armoured cable PVC converts and galvanised wire were recovered from his storeroom.
Also recovered was Moyo’s blue unregistered motorcycle which he had left with Murambiwa as collateral for the copper he had taken after remaining with a balance of US$70. Nhau/Indaba
