All Set For Kwekwe Open Karate Championships

The 11th edition of the Kwekwe Open Karate Championships will take place at Kwekwe Queens Sports Club on July 22.

The tournament, dubbed “Best of the Best,” is hosted by Sensei Sheered Ziwira, who is the Japan Karate Association of Zimbabwe chief instructor and Midlands Karate Union technical director.

Several athletes from across the country are expected to grace the event which is also used to select the country’s representatives for some international competitions.

Top karatekas are expected to battle it out in the senior men’s, junior boys’ and junior girls’ categories.

“The preparations are going very well and are at an advanced stage. In terms of training most athletes are in good shape, since we are just coming from the Region Five Games.

As has been the case in the past years we expect athletes and a high level of competition from all the participants,” said Ziwira.

Excelling karatekas will walk away with prizes that include trophies, medals and certificates.

At the just-ended African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Championships that were held in Harare, Zimbabwe finished the competition in third place with a total of 40 medals, bagging five gold medals, 10 silver and 25 bronze.

South Africa won the tournament after collecting a total of 149 medals, 56 gold, 37 Silver and 56 bronze, while in second place was Botswana with 47 medals.
