There was pomp and fanfare at Harare Gardens Saturday where the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival finals were held after a two-year Covid-19 induced break.

The show was also a celebration of 60 years since the first Chibuku traditional brew was made.

Superstars Jah Prayzah and Killer T, the guest artists, did not disappoint. Their yesteryear hits such  as “Emerina” (Jah Prayzah) and “Vanorohwa nemabeer” (Killer T) sent fans into a frenzy as they downed the famous Chibuku Super brew which left some knocked out due to excessive drinking.

Mutare-based mbakumba dance group Dapurahunanzva outclassed all the traditional dance groups. The 17-member troupe walked away US$15 000 richer.

Their manager, Kiven Simomhondo, told Nhau that they started participating in the dance festival in 2003 and came first in Manicaland Province in the last four competitions but kept working hard to clinch the first price.

” We have been working so hard throughout to clinch the national award. Each time we reached the finals and lost we would go back to the drawing board and re-strategise until we scooped the first prize.”

“We have been in the Chibuku Neshamwari competition since 2003 and this is the first we have won. We have been participating in all the provincial finals and we have been coming first in the last four competitions despite losing in the national finals,” he said.

He said the prize money would be injected back into the group for developmental purposes as they were spearheading a junior policy.

Guruve Arts Ensemble from  Mashonaland Central came second after showcasing their dinhe dance which earned them US$10 000.

Mufakose-based  Dedza Chitandidzo came third with their Nyau dance and won US$7 000 for their efforts.

Three lucky women; Nyasha Vherisoni from Mvurwi, Stacia Zhuwau and  Eunice Banda won a brand new Nissan Navara single cab each as part of the 60 ‘years of friendship’ celebrations.

The fourth one was won by a man, Tapiwa Magweba from Ngundu.
