Chiefs Chipuriro, Chiweshe Clash Over Afrochine Mine In Matusadonha

Mashonaland Central’s Chief Chipuriro, born Clever Mashiki has called on his subjects to welcome all legal investors that would want to work in his chiefdom without considering colour, creed or race.

This follows the recent onslaught against the Chinese by Chief Chiweshe, born Matthew Chitemamuswe.

Chief Chipuriro has given his blessings for a Chinese company, Afrochine, to start chrome mining operations in the Matusadonha mountain range.

The decision goes against Chief Chiweshe’s stance of accusing the Chinese company of intending to loot gold and chrome in the process degrading the area’s environment without developing it.

Chief Chiweshe and his subjects are against the looming mining operations but Chief Chipuriro has welcomed the move claiming the area is under his jurisdiction and not under Chief Chiweshe as claimed by recent media reports.

He said the mining company will operate in the area with his blessings as it has been granted mining rights by the government.

“This area which the Chinese are going to mine is under my jurisdiction and not under Chief Chiweshe as claimed. These investors bring development and jobs in our communities. We would want more here, in either the mining or agricultural sectors as long as they do their operations above board,” he said.

The chief claimed that he was the one responsible for conducting rituals in the area and had lined up a ceremony this weekend, adding that they wanted the mining activities to co-exist with tourism.

“I am the one who does all the rituals for that area, and this weekend we are going to have some rituals there.
As much as we know that the area is a tourist attraction, we would also want tourism to coexist with development,” Chief Chipuriro said.

Muzarabani residents and stakeholders from the tourism sector are against the operations of Afrochine Mine.

Supported by Chief Chiweshe they are saying the existence of the mine on the mountain range will affect the ecosystem.

However, impeccable sources within the mining company say they will fence the area where the mining activities will take place so that wild animals and livestock would be protected. Nhau/Indaba
