Compulsory Covid-19 Testing For Police Officers

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has ordered mass testing for all 45,000 police officers, it says “to reduce chances of spreading the coronavirus in our offices and working environs.”

An internal police memo seen by ZimLive says the testing – which will be free – is compulsory.

“Following the recent surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths, addressees are advised that all members should undergo compulsory Covid-19 testing at their nearest camp clinic or hospital…,” the July 17 memo, addressed to all police departments, said.

“This measure has been necessitated by the need to contain the rapid spread of coronavirus currently ravaging the country,” the ZRP said.

The ZRP encouraged offices who commute to work from home “to limit their movements outside their respective home areas to avoid infections.”

Zimbabwe’s health ministry on Sunday reported 1,006 new Covid-19 infections, pushing the total to date to 83,619. The official death toll is up to 2,622 after 34 more people died.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week announced an ambitious plan to vaccinate one million people in two weeks, which would require over 70,000 vaccines to be administered daily. On Sunday, only 12,043 people received their first dose, while 1,765 others took their second shot. ZimLive
