Conman Masquerading As Army Brigadier Dupes 8 Cops

By Gilbert Munetsi

A daring conman, posing as a Brigadier in the Zimbabwe National Army, had the audacity to dupe eight police officers into giving him US$150 each after promising them A2 pieces of land.

One of the victims is the Officer-in-Charge of St Mary’s Police Station.

Christopher Mukwambeni (32) recently appeared at Chitungwiza Magistrates Courts where he was remanded in custody to August 8.

He is being charged with Fraud as defined in Section 136 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23, as well as impersonation in line with Section 179 of the Criminal Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.

It is the state’s case that on unknown dates, but in August 2021, Mukwambeni unlawfully misrepresented to officers at St Mary’s Police Station that he was attached to the Ministry of Lands and had the capacity to facilitate A2 farms.

His victims – who each paid him US$150 – have been named as Osward Muguza, Sharai Mutema, Stephen Gorimbo, Laiza Masareni, Modwick Musonza and Emerinziana Tukwa.

The State further argues that in the same month and year, and with intent to obtain an advantage for himself, the Mukwambeni acquired a fake Zimbabwe National Army identity card with the rank of Brigadier.

Upon arrest, he later led the investigation team for indications in Zengeza 2, but there were no recoveries.

It has since been established that he has committed similar offences in Mbare, Mvurwi and Centenary.

He was denied bail on the basis that he is of no fixed aboard, is likely to abscond owing to the gravity of the case and investigations are still ongoing to verify with establishments such as the Lands Ministry and the ZNA. Nhau/Indaba
