PAVCON Industries (Pvt) Limited, has joined the fight against drug abuse after successfully launching the Pavcon Sports Tournament, an annual sports fiesta, at Mupereki Primary School in Mamina, Mashonaland West.

Drug abuse cases have become rampant amongst the youth, with some being admitted at mental health institutions, as a result of the vice.

Addressing delegates at the launch of the tournament, Shelton Paza, who is the founder and director of Pavcon Industries, said the initiative is meant to complement government’s blueprint, National Development Strategy (NDS1), at the same time doing away with the rampant cases of drug abuse amongst youths.

“It’s sad to note that the youths of today are being led astray by rogue businessman and women who advance the use the drugs to our future leaders. Many youths are being admitted at mental health institutions because of drug abuse. The vice is stealing and misdirecting the bloodline of the nation.

“Therefore, it is with this view that Pavcon Industries chips in with the initiative of sports in this community so as to protect our future leaders from the social ills that threaten our tomorrow,” said Paza.

The Pavcon sport initiative saw a total of eight schools mainly from Nyikamusha and Mhondoro Ngezi Clusters competing for top honours in three different sporting categories namely; football, netball and volleyball. Dondoshawa Primary School grabbed the football bragging rights after winning the final, while Rusununguko Primary School won in the netball category.

Hosts Mupereki were not to be left out on the podium after winning in the volleyball category.

Former Dynamos and Warriors player, Edward Sadomba who also attended the event applauded PAvcon Industries for the noble initiative and pledged to actively participate in next year’s edition, while also stressing the need to incorporate high schools.

“I pledge to support the initiative by Pavcon Industries in next year’s edition of the tournament and I can tell you that plans are already in motion to include secondary schools from next year onwards.”

The inaugural tournament proved to be a resounding success. About 2 000 people attended to witness the spectacle. Nhau/Indaba
