Covid-19: Hwange Urban Reels Under 3rd Wave

There has been a notable increase in Covid-19 cases in Hwange district since the third wave hit Zimbabwe a few weeks ago.

Hwange urban is largely responsible for the sharp rise in the district, dominating in terms of new cases.

The mining town is not an isolated case, the increase comes on the back of a national spike, which has seen some hospitals running out of beds.

Statistics availed during a Hwange District Covid-19 Taskforce meeting showed that as from 22 June 2021 the Hwange colliery hospital has recorded 66 active cases from Hwange urban area alone.

In total, Hwange district has 108 active cases since the beginning of the third wave.

Although the nationwide lockdown was announced in Mid-June to curb the deadly pandemic, Hwange district is reluctant when it comes to adhering to Covid-19 regulations.

“People are attending funerals in large numbers and some attend funeral wakes without adhering to any Covid-19 regulations,” said Patrick Utete during the meeting.

In a survey carried out by this publication, major supermarkets operating in Hwange town such as OK and Sativa are letting their shops get overcrowded with a complete disregard for social distancing by customers.

Meanwhile, Hwange stakeholders indicated the need for an urgent quarantine centre to monitor those who test positive for the virus.

“There is an urgent need to establish an affordable quarantine centre in Hwange town in order to monitor the active cases of the coronavirus,” said Ndumiso Mdlalose, the Chairman of the Hwange District Covid-19 Taskforce.

He said it becomes difficult for the district to monitor the active cases if they are not in one place. Although Hwange district has a private quarantine centre in Victoria falls which charges US$85 per night, there is need to establish an affordable one in the mining town of Hwange. Nhau/Indaba
