Special Advisor to the President on disability issues, Dr Joshua Malinga, has encouraged people living with disabilities to participate in community-driven developmental programmes.

Speaking at an event held at Lwendulu Hall in Hwange recently, Dr Malinga said people living with disabilities sometimes lacked confidence, hence only a few cases concerning them are raised in the community.

“I have realised that disabled people lack confidence to participate in developmental community programmes. I want to encourage and empower this marginalised group of people, so that they have confidence to play a part in developing their communities,” he said.

During the event, Dr Malinga donated rice and shoes to 360 people living with disabilities. Dr Malinga also visited Big Challe, real name Charles Gumbo. Big Challe has challenges walking due to his size, weighing an incredible 388 kilogrammes and standing at over two metres tall.

Big Challe told the minister that he has been facing financial constraints.

“I’m facing challenges raising money to buy necessities like food and clothes. I would be grateful if I got blankets and shoes since we are heading towards the winter season,” said Big Challe.

The giant, who revealed that he requires four times the amount of food that a “normal” person eats per meal, said he needed money or food supplies.

“I am grateful for this 20kg pack of rice, it will sustain me for some days,” said Big Challe.
