Former MDC Senator Timveos Dies, Gets State Burial

President Mnangagwa has announced a State-assisted funeral for former opposition senator, businesswoman, and Zanu PF politician Cde Lillian Timveos, who passed away at age 51 in a Harare hospital.

In his statement, President Mnangagwa expressed sadness over the unexpected loss of Cde Timveos, describing her as a dynamic grassroots politician, community leader, and gender activist.

He highlighted her move from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) to Zanu PF in 2021, where she was among the first wave of opposition leaders to join the ruling party.

President Mnangagwa praised her transition as an example of independent-minded politics aimed at unity, stating, “Her passing has robbed our nation of a promising leader.”

Timveos quickly rose in Zanu PF ranks after her switch, being appointed to the Petrotrade board in 2021, although she was later suspended due to corruption allegations. She continued to serve in various roles, including as a member of the Zanu PF Cyber Team and as a coordinator for former opposition members who were joining Zanu PF.

Her commitment to public service and development was further reflected in her advocacy for women’s empowerment through projects in the Midlands. Zanu PF Midlands vice-chairman Cde Lewis Matutu praised her work ethic and noted her impact on both her community and the broader Zimbabwean society.

Born in 1973 in Kwekwe, Cde Timveos began her career in politics with a strong commitment to community service, eventually completing training at the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology in 2021.

In 2023, she was appointed national secretary responsible for training and implementation in the Citizens Against Economic Sanctions National Executive Council, representing the Midlands province.

President Mnangagwa extended his condolences to the Timveos family, directing government support for her funeral. “May they find respite and comfort in the great esteem with which we all held her,” he said.

Cde Timveos is survived by her husband, Michael, and four children.
