Four members from the Office of the President and Cabinet who were part of First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s charity team perished in a road accident along the Ruwangwe-Nyanga road early Thursday morning.

Two others who survived the accident are reported to be in a serious condition and have been evacuated to Regina Coeli Mission hospital where they are being attended to.

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr. Misheck Sibanda announced the sad incident in a statement.

“The Office of The President and Cabinet regrets to announce the death of four of its staff members from a road accident which occurred early this morning at a black spot near Regina Coeli Mission along the Nyanga-Ruwangwe road. The deceased were a part of an office team delivering goods for the less privileged in Ruwangwe community under the First Lady’s community assistance and empowerment programme when a State Residences vehicle overturned. The four died on the accident scene, with another two officers who have since been evacuated to Regina Coeli Mission hospital, sustaining serious injuries.  The Office will, in due course, provide more details on this tragic accident which is already being investigated by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.”

Dr Sibanda said the First Lady was not part of the support team when the accident happened but had plans to interact withabout 20 households in Ruwangwe.

“The First Lady who was scheduled to interact with about 20 households in Ruwangwe today, was still in Nyanga Town at the time of the accident. The office wishes to express its deepest, heartfelt condolences to families of the deceased who are being reached over the incident. In the same vein, the Office wishes the two injured officers speedy recovery. Measures are underway to ensure the injured officers secure best care,” he said.

It is not the first time the First Lady’s support vehicles have been involved in a road accident.

In April last year, the First Lady lost her aide, Albert Vunganai, while three others were injured after a vehicle which was part of her convoy overturned on a rocky embankment near Muzarabani, Mashonaland Central.

She was also involved in another accident in July last year along the Harare-Bindura Highway after a motorist rammed into a Toyota Land Cruiser she was traveling in and it overturned. Nhau/Indaba
