Hailstorm Leaves Trail Of Destruction In Bindura

Five people were injured while several houses were left in different states of damage following a violent storm that hit Bindura last Thursday.

The violent storm also destroyed Bindura Provincial Hospital’s X-ray room roof, uprooted some trees and around 40 electricity poles that left some parts of the town powerless for over 96 hours.

Two hectares of vegetables that were in the storm’s path were destroyed while five hectares of maize at knee level were flattened in Greenhill and Cleverhill areas.

Willard Masimba, Deputy Director for Local Governance and point person for the Provincial Civil Protection Unit (CPU) said works to repair the destruction had already commenced.

“Bindura Provincial hospital, Cleverhill and Greenhill are the areas that were mainly affected by the storm and we have liaised with Freda Rebecca mine for assistance with equipment needed to bring back sanity in affected areas, the government would want to see everything back to normal in time,” said Masimba.

“As the Provincial CPU, we are running around seeking assistance and Freda Rebecca Mine has come on board to assist ZETDC in restoring the poles and power. Works to repair the hospital apartments destroyed is in progress,” he said.

Masimba was grateful for the role played by Fredda Rebecca Gold Mine seconded its staff to compliment the Public Works department working on the hospital.

He also appealed to the corporate world for assistance as 20 households are in need of food aid.

Ten households also require clothing and blankets while 15 houses need roofing materials. Nhau/Indaba
