Highway Robbers Strip Elderly Couple

Bindura Bureau
Police in Mashonaland Central have raised concern following increased reports of robberies on commuters in recent days across the province.

This follows a recent attack on an elderly couple, John Musinachirevo (60) and his wife Tabeth Musinachirevo (57) who allegedly boarded an unidentified vehicle that resembles a Honda CRV at corner Sam Nunjoma and Josiah Chinamano Avenue in Harare.

They were intending to go to Bindura at around 10pm.

The vehicle had four other occupants; the driver, a female passenger on the front seat, and two males who were flanking the couple at the back.

When they reached Christonbank turn off one of the four who was seated at the back seat to the right side asked for transport fare and Musinachirevo gave him a US$20 note. After receiving the money, he allegedly produced a kitchen knife and pointed it at his wife’s neck saying in vernacular, “Makwira mota yembavha.”

He then ordered the couple to surrender all their belongings including the clothes they were dressed in.

They complied before surrendering everything in their possession.

Musinachirevo lost US$25, a Samsung cell phone, a pair of blue jean trousers, a white shirt, black shoes, and a black satchel containing assorted clothes to the cheeky robbers.

His wife was deprived of US$60 cash, ZW$400 cash, a POSB bank card, a U-turnGtel cell phone, a ZUPCO tap card, her National ID card, her clothes, and a bag with other clothes.

After being dispossessed of their belongings, they reportedly had their hands tied with some rope before the driver made a U-turn near Blueridge in Mazowe and stopped the vehicle.

They went on to drag the couple from the vehicle into a nearby bush where they dumped them and drove back towards Harare.

The couple was taken to ZRP Mazowe by a well-wisher, Zephania Zirima (33) of Masasa Farm, Mazowe using his vehicle where they managed to make a police report the following day.

Deputy police provincial spokesperson, Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha warned members of the public against boarding private cars driven by strangers at any time of the day.

He also warned of the consequences of traveling during late hours or at night.

“Travelling late and at night is also highly discouraged,” S/Major Chikasha said. Nhau/Indaba
