The Zimbabwe Republic Police(ZRP) has launched a manhunt for a gang of three unknown highway robbers targeting motorists plying the Harare Mvurwi/Centenary road in Mashonaland Central.
They are allegedly robbing both motorists and passengers of their belongings and in some instances attempting to rape some of their female victims.
ZRP Provincial spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe said last week the the gang hijacked Oscar Mutyire of Plot 89 Hasiyana Farm Mvurwi of his metallic blue Honda Fit, registration AFS 0986.
He said the gang boarded the Mutyire’s car at corner Herbert Chitepo and Second Street in Harare on September 1 this year while on his way to Mvurwi around 7pm.
They were purporting to be going to Mvurwi and he had two other passengers on board.
“Upon reaching Mutorashanga turn-off at an area well known as Tsatse, the three who were seated in the back seat asked to be dropped saying they had reached their destination.
Mutyire stopped and was immediately grabbed from behind by one of the robbers who threatened to kill him. On sensing danger, the two other passengers disappeared into darkness running for their lives,” he said.
Insp Mundembe said the gang handcuffed Mutyire and placed him in the back seat before driving the car towards Harare.
After reaching Avondale shops in Harare, they stopped the car before searching him and took two cell phones as well as cash amounting to US$200.
The they dumped him at the shopping centre after also tying both his legs with shoelaces and drove off.
Their identity is still unknown and police have encouraged motorists to desist from carrying strangers in their cars.
“Anyone with information that may lead to the identification of the trio can report at the nearest police station,” said Insp Mundembe. Nhau/Indaba
