Residents of Mt Darwin in Mashonaland Central will remain forever grateful to host the first national rural Independence celebrations, an event that has brought with it a lot of benefits to the community.
Developments that have taken place in preparation for the historic April 18 national celebrations have increased accessibility to the town through the refurbishment of feeder roads by the local authority and RIDA (DDF).
The Department of Roads has also contracted Exodus, Bitumen World, and CMED to maintain the Harare-Mt Darwin highway.
The road to Darwin High School (ZB – Hospital Rd) is being resealed. This road is important to the Mt Darwin community and the entire district as it links four public institutions; namely; Mt Darwin District Hospital, Pfura Stadium, and Darwin Primary and Secondary Schools.
Apart from that, the Public Works District offices, Old Pfura location, Department of Roads offices, DDF offices, and camp are also located along this road.
Load-shedding hours have been restricted to about four hours per day. This has led to improved water supplies from ZINWA which requires a minimum of 18 hours to pump water to all the reservoirs which supply the precious commodity in Mt Darwin.
Mt Darwin Primary and Secondary are also set to benefit from the event as President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to donate ICT equipment to them.
Pfura Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer, Stanslous Nyachowe, said the historic celebrations had brought about infrastructural and economic transformation in the district.
“Mt Darwin will never be the same again as the hosting of the celebrations has brought with it a number of infrastructural developments, chief amongst these being the construction of a new stadium which will be the main venue. It has changing rooms, public toilets, a tartan athletics track, a security fence, a solar-powered borehole for irrigation and some flood lights are to be installed. Terraces for the stadium are on the cards as well.”
“On the business side, there is an improvement as we get close to the momentous and historic day. Our SMEs are set to benefit. We are setting up a place for them, where they will operate from.
“Remember there is going to be the Children’s Party, the main celebrations and the musical gala. All these events will see a rise in business activities leading to an improvement in our local economic development,” he said.
Nyachowe added Pfura Stadium is also having a face-lift which will see the surrounding precast wall and change rooms being upgraded.
“The much-needed public toilets which were non-existent are under construction and will be ready for use when the Children’s Party is held on April 17, 2023. The community is really excited and can’t wait for the day anymore.”
Nhau/Indaba heard that Council authorities have written to all business owners encouraging them to spruce up their buildings to improve the centre’s aesthetics.
A number of clean-up campaigns started last Wednesday with the full participation of members from the community.
Mt Darwin an important cog in the road to our Independence is home to over 10 000 people set to benefit through President Mnangagwa’s “nyika inovakwa nevene vayo, leaving no one and no place behind” mantra. Nhau/Indaba
