Jacob Mafume Bounces Back As Harare Mayor

By Daniel Kachere News Editor

In what appears to be a circus within the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leadership in Harare Metropolitan, lawyer and councillor Jacob Mafume has been re-elected Harare Mayor.

Mafume’s term came to an end before the August harmonised elections paving way for Ian Makone.

However, early November, self-styled CCC Sengezo Tshabangu “interim secretary general” recalled then Harare Mayor Ian Makone and deputy Kudzai Kadzombe from the party.

Harare councillors Denford Ngadziore, Lovejoy Chitegu, Samuel Gwenzi, Chido Hamauswa, Tiriboyi Sabina, Florence Cheza and Matimba Fadzai were also victims of his axe.

This led to another election which saw councillor Lovejoy Chitengu being elected new mayor with Rosemary Muronda being elected deputy mayor.

Chitengu who was also a recalled CCC member himself survived the Tshabangu guillotine owing to an anomaly omitting the letter “n” on his surname leading him to wear the much-coveted mayoral rob for a few days.

His luck ran out on December 12 when Local Government and Public Works minister Winston Chitando wrote a letter to Harare Town Clerk advising of a correction to the recall letter of Chitengu, confirming his recall.

In a new twist, an election this Thursday saw the return of Mafume to the helm.

However, Mafume has a mammoth task ahead of him following the Cholera menace which is raging on among poor service delivery in the form dereliction of duty in waste collection and repair of damaged water and sewer pipes. Nhau/Indaba
