These have been generational debates. Diego Maradona vs Pele, Real Madrid vs Barcelona, Andre Agassi vs Pete Sampras, Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo, Bob Marley vs Peter Tosh, Leonard Dembo vs Simon Chimbetu, Alick Macheso vs Tongai Moyo, Pilsener vs Lion Lager or Highlanders vs Dynamos.
In fact, the list is endless. And it should be little surprise that this generation is seized with who is better: Winky D or Jah Prayzah. I know that there are some, or many, who will quickly dismiss this comparison based on that the two do different genres.
When they raise this argument, they conveniently overlook, when they compare Pele and Maradona, that the two played in different eras. They also conveniently overlook that Chimbetu and Dembo played different genres, or that Pilsener is a green bottle and Lion Lager a brown one.
This debate, on who is better between Jah Prayzah and Winky D, is neither my brainchild nor my prompting, but a creation of circumstances. The two sets of fans, Jah’s and Winky’s, are always, at any given opportunity, are at each other’s throat, on who is better, smarter (dressing), cleaner (deeds) or got more firepower (chaunga, fan base).
And not for the first time, this question will partially be answered on October 5 at Kadoma’s Odyssey where they will meet before the same audience, same atmosphere, same public address system, albeit playing different genres.
On paper, Winky D sounds cleaner (deeds office, that is) for they have failed to dig any dirt on him. Or that they have not dug enough. For someone who has always maintained that Winky D is not Wallace Chirumiko, or vice versa, he has done very well to keep his private life exactly that: private.
It is like the guy fell from space, maybe he was chest-beating when he did Chi-Extra Terrestrial.
On the other side of the planet, though not much has been said (much have been whispers), Jah’s private life was not helped much when that picture circulated, a picture which seemed too cosy, him with about six kgs of gold.
Appearing on the music stage at about the same time, many fans have been tempted to judge on who has reached the peak faster, or better and that jury is still sitting. And might even remain sitting for the foreseeable future.
I think it all boils down to a question of taste and the cross-over audience (those who like both musicians) are likely to provide the swing vote on October 5. In America, that would be your Pennsylvania or Wisconsin.
I am not here to bore you down with statistics and all that stuff, save to say this debate, on who is better between Jah Prayzah and Winky D, which has been an existing question for a considerable time now, is likely to be settled at the Odyssey, come October 5.
Are you going to be part of the crowd that will give that verdict? PS: Are you aware that Simon Chimbetu once upstaged Lucky Dube at the City Sports Centre or Koffi Olomide at Jamaica Inn – on different dates. Yet these two came in as the main acts and Chimbetu as the “local supporting act”?
In my next instalment, I will look at the chances of history repeating itself when Alick Macheso comes face-to-face with Diamond Platinum at the same venue, same date. Don’t miss it.
