A 47-year-old married man has been arrested in Mashonaland Central for reportedly attempting to gun down his girlfriend after she had terminated their relationship.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha identified the assailant as Bernard Mpofu of Madziwa.
His girlfriend who survived the ordeal was identified as Patience Makanika (33).
Chikasha alleged that last Sunday, Mpofu arrived at Makanika’s residence located at Ponesai Vanhu Business Centre in Shamva around 11pm.
He is reported to have been drunk and his new found flame refused to entertain him in bed asserting that she had no time for drunkards.
This infuriated Mpofu who stormed out of the room back to the shopping centre where he spent the whole night until 7am the next morning.
He returned to Makanika’s place thinking that she had calmed down only to be turned down again and ordered to go to his wife.
This did not go down well with him as he had been paying rentals for her all along.
According to Chikasha, in a bid to solve the issue, Mpofu called one of their mutual friends and neighbour Susan Chigombe to mediate. However, Makanika persisted that she was done with Mpofu and wanted him out of her room despite his service of paying rentals.
This further enraged Mpofu who subsequently pulled out an FN Pistol and fired it towards Makanika injuring her ear.
He allegedly fired a second shot aiming for the forehead but she managed to dodge the bullet.
Sensing danger Chingombe then ran out and informed ,one Constable Chimuko, her neighbour about the incident.
Cst Chimuko then arrested Mpofu whilst Makanika was transported to Mt Darwin hospital for medical attention. Nhau/Indaba
