Judges’ Expectations At Old Mutual Amazing Voices Competition

THE ongoing search for Africa’s top unsigned acapella talents from five countries at the Old Mutual Amazing Voices Season 2 singing competition, entered its third episode yesterday with each group introducing itself through an acapella song at Sun City in South Africa.

Ten acapella groups, two from each country — Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa, battling for the whopping
US$100 000 grand prize on offer — were selected from the over 500 online videos that were submitted as entries to the auditions that started in October last year.

The show is aired every Sunday on channels for the respective countries, Zambezi Magic in Zimbabwe at 5pm, Simulcast on Mzansi Magic and Mzansi Wethu in South Africa at 5pm, Africa Magic in Ghana at 3pm, Maisha Magic East in Kenya at 6pm, Africa Magic in Nigeria at 4pm.Judges for this year’s edition are local Afro-pop and RnB powerhouse Ammara Brown, Evelle, a previous Nigerian Idols winner, singer and collaborator, Kenya’s Filah Tuju, renowned as a performer, voice coach, writer and producer and founder of a music academy, Ghana’s Trigmatic, a multi-award winner rapper, composer and songwriter and South Africa’s Vusi Nova, the best Afro album and best male awards winner.

Judges would be looking at various issues.

“I am looking for super stars … Groups that you can tell that they have been together for a while. They have experience, character and their personality shine through in their music,” Nova said.

Evelle said as a new judge, she would be looking for originality, creativity and growth.

Filah said he would be looking for the sincerity of every performance from all the groups and the connection between the members of the groups.

“Beyond the money and winning the competition, I want to see if these groups have what it takes to do well in the music industry in the long term,” he said.

Ammara said: “I am expecting people to sort of push themselves. I am interested to see what the contestants are going to do this season.”

Trig said he wanted to see what Africa had for the second time.

“I want to see what the groups have … I know Season 2 of Old Mutual Amazing Voices will be like an upgrade from the first season. I want to see what voices they are bringing … Guys this is Season 2,” he said.

Old Mutual Zimbabwe group spokesperson Lawrence Mawoni recently said Zimbabwe was well represented in this year’s edition of the competition.

“We are enormously impressed by the number of people who auditioned remotely despite the global pandemic, they took time and commitment to rehearse and perform,” he said.

Mawoni said the talents’ journey to stardom would be closely monitored by experienced adjudicators from each of the countries and supported by show adviser Zwai Bala. *AMH*
