JUST IN: City Planner Charumbira Granted Bail

Harare City Planner Priscila Charumbira, wife to National Chiefs Council president Fortune Charumbira has been granted $40 000 bail by Harare regional magistrate Bianca Makwande.

Charumbira was also ordered not to visit her workplace or any City of Harare premises for a month to enable investigations to be carried out without any hindrance and not to interfere with State witnesses.

She was also ordered to report once every Friday at Highlands Police Station and to continue residing at her given address.

The State led by George Manokore had opposed granting bail citing that she was facing a serious offence with a custodial sentence that might induce her to flee from trial.

Her lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku told the court that the State had failed to submit any compelling reasons for her to be denied bail.

Magistrate Makwande then ruled that the State failed to bring compelling reasons as bail can only be denied under such circumstances.

She said the court cannot infringe rights of an accused person basing on what the State said and that Charumbira was also a human being with a constitutional right to bail.

Charumbira is facing abuse of office charges on allegations of changing land use for open spaces and wetlands without following laid-down procedures.

The matter was deferred to November 28, 2020 for routine remand.Nhau/Indaba
