Kombi Conductor Pushes Man To Death Over Torn US$1 Note

A kombi conductor has been arrested for murder after a commuter died when he was pushed out of the vehicle for paying with a torn US$1 note.

Tawanda Pindu, 25, shoved 43-year-old Batsirai Chitsindi to his death at a service station at Arcadia Shopping Centre after he boarded the Toyota Hiace in Harare CBD intending to go to Maruva in Epworth at about 10 PM on October 13.

The two men rowed over a torn note Chitsindi handed over to pay his fare.

“This did not go down well with Pindu and the two men exchanged words,” a police statement said.

“When the omnibus got to Comoil service station to refuel… Pindu then forcefully pushed Chitsindi who fell down on his back with his head hitting the ground and he became unconscious. Pindu tried to resuscitate him but to no avail.”

Pindu handed himself over at Braeside Police Station.

Responding officers found Chitsindi dead with a deep wound at the back of his head.

Witnesses told police Chitsindi, who had a broken beer bottle and some food next to his body, “appeared to be drunk.”

Service providers including shops are known to reject torn bank notes because they say their banks also don’t want them, despite repeated warnings by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe which says torn notes are still valid legal tender. ZimLive
