Landmine Explodes On 9-Year-Old Hwange Girl

A nine-year-old girl from Hwange is battling for her life after a landmine exploded on her this morning while she was playing.

The young girl from Simangani Ward 10 in Hwange was playing outside when she sat on a suspected landmine, which then exploded damaging her left leg and her buttocks.

She was rushed to Hwange Colliery Hospital.

An eye-witness Orsino Mupande told Nhau that: “The girl is severely injured and the parents are finding it hard to come to terms with the incident. There were some pieces of her leg all over the ground, the girl was left with wounds on her stomach as well.”

Mupande added that landmines in the area are probably now exposed to the surface due to the heavy rains.

“The heavy downpour has probably washed the top soil hence exposing the landmines to the surface and posing danger to the community,” he said.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time a landmine has exploded in Simangani area. Villagers are calling to the responsible authority to intervene. Nhau/Indaba
